Shut Up!!!


Why are we so afraid of silence? What compels us to fill space with activity, or sounds, or vocal and behavioral tics that clearly demonstrate our discomfort and inability to communicate? (think long drawn out vowels, shifting feet on the floor, hands jammed into pockets, noncommittal nodding of the head, nervous laughter and strained facial expressions)
Are we afraid of revealing ourselves? Is it an attempt to shield ourselves from embarrassment?
Have you ever tossed the conversational ball and had the other drop it? If you've ever tried to have a pleasant talk with someone who is not interested in chatting it up, you know this can be an awkward moment. Your olive branch goes like this,
